Advent: Waiting On God - Matthew 11:1-19

Reflection:

  • If God delights in a deeper relationship with us, why can He at times feel distant? If God cares about us, why do bad things continue to happen in our lives? What do you do with your disappointment in God?

  • Our hopes and fears are met in Jesus. How can this help cultivate a deeper confidence in God’s character and a wiser and more resilient faith?

  • Your difficult relationships in life may be a channel through which God is attempting to cultivate grace and mercy in your life. Where might the Spirit be encouraging you to repay evil with good, slander with blessing?

  • Are you living as an individual, and are we living as a community in such a way that would invite others to think about Jesus for themselves?

  • Is the promise of the kingdom of God real to you? Do you believe it enough to participate and engage with the mission of God?

  • Have you found that the more you engage in the mission of God, it increasingly becomes the means by which the Spirit builds your trust in the promises of God?

Advent: Waiting On God - Isaiah 11:1-10

Reflection:

  • What high trees in your life (idols, attributes) might need to be cut down? Is there arrogance, pride, selfishness where God needs to do some landscaping?

  • The Spirit of God in you aches for what God wants to produce in your life. What tangible actions can you take in day to day life to facilitate the work of the Spirit in your character?

  • What can your life and work like when you fully submit yourself to the hands of the creator of the universe? What idols, attributes and habits might God desire to carve out of your life?

  • God is making all things new. What does God want to make new in you, Ottawa and the world?

  • Have you surrendered yourself to the Holy Spirit? If the Spirit of God was a river, are you ankle deep? Waist deep? Or fully immersed and controlled by the river?

  • How does God desire to shape you this Advent?

Christ the King - Luke 23:33-43

Reflection:

  • Are there people in your life that you hold bitterness and resentment towards? Ask God to increasingly heal any lasting wounds and ask him to give you the strength to forgive them. Who do you need to forgive in your life?

  • How do we be with Jesus, become like Him and experience his presence (eternal life) here and now?

  • Have you surrendered your throne to the rightful King? Jesus calls us to surrender our whole being and to find true wholeness in the process. In what areas of your life is Christ calling for deeper surrender?

  • Taking the whole Bible into account, what kind of king is Jesus? What can you learn about all these images? In light of what the Bible teaches about him, what kind of church should Renewal Church be?

The Book of 2 Thessalonians - 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17

Reflection:

  • What are the ways in which you get ahead of yourself and focus on the future at the expense of present life?

  • Do I live in hope that there will one day be true justice and shalom (wholeness) in this world? If so, how can you (and Renewal Church) become increasingly involved in God’s ongoing renewal here and now?

  • In what ways are you able to tangibly bring the presence of Jesus into the mundane realities of your everyday eating, working, parenting etc?

  • What would it look like if Jesus himself were to live your daily life (your unique profession, studies, single, married, parent, child etc.)?

  • What would it look like to live into the freedom that Jesus provides? Freedom from slavery to lust, anxiety, racism, greed, selfishness, coveting?

November 10, 2019

The Book of 2 Thessalonians - 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

Reflection:

  • Why do you think Paul thanks God for the growth of the believers rather than thanking the

  • Thessalonians themselves? What is the role of the believer in their salvation and growth?

  • What speaks the most to you personally about God’s greatness? What causes you to love and worship

  • God more deeply when you look at the lives of other believers?

  • When you interact with others, where do you point them for comfort? When helping those who hurt,

  • do you point them to something temporary, or to eternal hope?

  • Punish with everlasting destruction sounds extreme, yet God is described as the very essence of love.

  • How do you reconcile these two concepts (grace, justice) and the character of God?

Journeying with the Unexpected - Acts 16:6-15

Guest Speaker: Shaun Liu

Reflection:

  • How do we respond when we our plans fail to materialize? Or when matters have not gone the way we want? How do you see God at work?

  • How does learning that Christianity was historically not a Western religion challenge the way you view the faith today?

  • In what ways do you see sharing the gospel to be an “joint endeavor” between you and the Holy Spirit? What does this effort look like when pursued as a community?

  • Does this require any action on our part? If so, what?

  • What elements of your past seem to hold you captive?

  • How would it feel to truly trust that God remembers your sin no more?

  • If God’s promise is true, what might this mean for your future?

  • Martin Luther once said “our gods are whatever or whoever is most important to us.” What ‘gods’ might you worship? Which ‘gods’ would you say our culture habitually worships? How can we meaningfully help steer culture away from those gods and towards Jesus?

The Book of 2 Timothy - 2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:5

Reflection:

  • What women and men have lived the faith into you, whether you were fully aware of it at the time or not?

  • The video displayed Christians in China opening their bibles for the first time. Do you respond in a similar way when you open yours?

  • Imagine you are explaining verses 3:16 and 17 to someone unfamiliar with Christianity, what would you say? What does it mean that all Scripture is God-breathed? Were the biblical authors like a pen in God’s hand, or like a direct scribe? What important things can we learn from these verses?

  • In a culture where tolerance is guarded as the top priority, what is the basis for us to reprove or rebuke others? When and how should we do this?

  • In light of Martin Luther King’s illustration, how do we as believers ‘play a song more beautiful than the others?’ How can followers of Jesus live in a way that is more compelling and captivating than every other story? In what ways does your life make much of Jesus?

  • What does true gospel freedom look like in regard to circumstances related to health, finance, relationships etc?

  • Imagine what it may look like if you sought to live your life “enduring,” and “faithful” to the gospel?

  • What connections can you make with the text and your habits, stewardship and those around you? What then would our lives of faith mean for the world, today, right now?

October 13, 2019

The Book of 2 Timothy - 2 Timothy 2:1-15

Reflection:

  • When Paul says to be like a good soldier of Jesus Christ, what would those seemingly mundane practices (like making your bed) look like?

  • In what ways does true contentment radically affect day to day life?

  • What does true gospel freedom look like in regard to circumstances related to health, finance, relationships etc?

  • Imagine what it may look like if you sought to live your life “enduring,” and “faithful” to the gospel?

  • What connections can you make with the text and your habits, stewardship and those around you? What then would our lives of faith mean for the world, today, right now?

  • Reflect on a time where you “came to your senses.” Give thanks for all those around you that were able to play some role in it.

  • In what ways does the posture and actions of the lovesick Father teach us about God? Give examples.

  • Whose story do you trust? Do you trust the story you’ve rehearsed your whole life? The story that others say about you? Or do you trust the one that the Father says about you?

  • How does the Father’s love reveal the lies embedded in the story you & others tell about yourself?

  • Are you enjoying the party in such a way that invites curiosity?

Hebrews - To Equip You With Everything Good - Hebrews 13:1-16

Reflection:

  • Take some time to reflect on the application of, “keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters,” as it relates to the original audience as well as Renewal church.

  • Consider the missional and evangelistic impact of opening your home and table to others.

  • What are the reasons why culture is obsessed with sex? In what ways have Christians bought into culture’s narrative regarding sex instead of what God teaches us? How can the church cultivate a safe and gracious environment to help others grow in honesty and transparency?

  • The love of money can manifest through greed, discontent, cheating others etc. If you are consumed with the love of money what fears are at the root of that love? How does the gospel cast out those fears and provide true contentment and fulfillment?

  • The writer of Hebrews instructs us to live in continual praise, good deeds and acts of generosity. Which of these areas are a strength for you? Which is God calling you to grow in?

August 25, 2019

Hebrews - To Equip You With Everything Good - Hebrews 12:18-29

Reflection:

  • Do you experience the intimacy with God that this passage affirms that we have? If not, what obstacles or barriers might be holding you back?

  • The writer lists several things that we have “come to,” in 22-24, which truths resonate most? Which are the hardest to comprehend? Which gives you the most joy?

  • Things in our lives and in our world seem to constantly be shaking. How does knowing that we are part of a “kingdom that cannot be shaken” give you hope, confidence, and peace?

  • Throughout the Bible, what does a healthy “fear of the Lord” look like? What does an unhealthy fear look like? How can we help each other know and experience the right type?

August 18, 2019

Hebrews - To Equip You With Everything Good - Hebrews 11:29-12:2

Reflection:

  • Think about times in your life where God has rescued you. When the obstacles ahead seemed to be literally impossible, but God split the seas and made a way for you to move forward against all odds. Reflect and give thanks for the victories in your life.

  • What plans and purpose has God placed on your mind and heart that seem unattainable at the moment? How might he be calling you to deeper trust and faith and what actions can you take to move towards that call?

  • What would it look like if we cross examined all things (trials, uncertainties, the future, what is unseen) against what we know to be true of the character of God

  • Do we live in the present as though the future has already arrived in Christ?

August 11, 2019

Hebrews - To Equip You With Everything Good - Hebrews 11:1-16

  • Do we live in the present as though the future has already arrived in Christ?

  • What is an act of faith in our lives that would be considered as foolishness to people around us?

Jesus + Nothing - Colossians 3:1-11

Reflection:

  • Do we embrace the truth that God sees us through the lenses of grace?

  • Where are you most tempted to find your identity? (ie. is it rooted in your ability, profession, position, family, possessions, lineage etc.)

July 28, 2019

Jesus + Nothing - Colossians 2:6-19

Reflection:

  • I am the True Vine” This implies that there are false vines that people can find themselves rooted in. What Vine are you making yourself at home in?

  • Have you ever felt the burden of legalism in your Christian experience? Do you ever feel that grace can’t be enough? Have you experienced the freedom that Paul is relaying to the Colossians?

July 21, 2019

Jesus + Nothing - Colossians 1:15-28

Reflection:

  • If Christ is “before all things,” what does this practically look like in regards to country, ethnicity, political affiliation, socioeconomic status, career, marriage, child rearing etc.?

  • If Jesus “holds all things together” what are the implications on the devastating effects of climate change, people dying from hunger, disease, disasters and acts of violence?

  • Since Christ is the head of the church, how can we tangibly submit Renewal church pastors, leadership, brothers and sisters to his guidance and care?

  • Are there attitudes, longings or worries in your heart that betray your confession that Jesus is King?

  • As you reflect on Jesus, what has made him more beautiful and glorious to you this week?

July 14, 2019

Jesus + Nothing - Colossians 1:1-14

Reflection:

  • How does ensuring that gospel indicatives precede gospel imperatives avoid many of the shortfalls of religion? If that pattern helps the Colossians ‘truly understand’ the gospel, how do we make sure we operate from gospel indicatives rather than sheer commands? What habits can we cultivate?

  • How might cultural shifts affect your perspective of what it means to be a follower of Jesus? Are you shaped more by the culture or the Kingdom?

  • Who needs to see and hear from you that Christ has rescued you and offers us the most compelling way to live?

  • How might the distinctiveness of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit help shape your prayers and encouragement to others?

Behold, I Am Coming Soon - John 17:20-26; Revelation 22:12-21

Reflection:

  • John has an underlying message of Empire and oppression in Revelation. There is the kingdom of this present age and there is the heavenly kingdom. Which Kingdom do you serve?

  • Jesus says that Christians would be known for our love. In what ways might your love be distinct from the world? How does love and unity with believers showcase your allegiance to Jesus?

  • The audience of Revelation had a choice: to serve Domitian (world) or Jesus.  Which King do you follow and serve?

  • John does not bash Domitian. He directs our attention to someone far better. Likewise, how might you (or the church community) direct attention to Jesus without intentionally building hostility with the world?

May 26, 2019

Behold, I Am Making All Things New - John 5:1-9; Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5

  • How have your experiences both good and bad (the conditioning process) helped you endure the journey to which God has called you?

  • Take time to reflect on the ways in which you and I are complicit in the forces that cause death, mourning, crying and pain. The power of these images invite us to renounce the holds these forces have on our lives as we follow Jesus here and now.

My Sheep Listen to My Voice; I Know Them, and They Follow Me - John 10:22-30

  • Every day you and I are overwhelmed with different voices, telling you who you are, what you should buy, who you ought to be. How do we discern what voice to listen to? Whose voice are you listening to?

  • “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Do you listen for the voice of Jesus? If his voice leads us to Gethsemane or deep surrender, will you obey?

  • Jesus’ actions in this passage enraged his opponents. Like Jesus, what does a voice of truth look like in today’s pluralistic culture? How might our actions and words communicate that Jesus is Lord in 2019?

Blessed Are Those Who Have Not Seen and Yet Have Believed - John 20:19-31

Reflection:

If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn’t rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said?  The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching but whether or not he rose from the dead.

– T. Keller

  • How does the Resurrection shape your thinking and living? How does it shape the way you see people, work and progress?

  • How are you modelling and displaying the power and hope of the Resurrection in your life within your sphere of influence?

  • The Scriptures teach “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”  How does being a child of God tangibly impact our fears in daily life?

April 21, 2019

Jesus Learned Obedience - Hebrews 5:4-10

Reflection:

  • Is it always appropriate to pray (for ourselves and for others) for deliverance from suffering? If not, how can we properly evaluate our emotions or know what to pray for?

  • In what ways has your suffering, the very things which threatened to break you, become a source of healing and wholeness for others?

The Pains of Childbirth Until Christ is Formed in You - Galatians 4:8-20
